During Statutory ECT Induction

How much time should I get for induction activities?

The ECF places a statutory duty on schools to ensure that ETs are provided with 10% additional non-teaching time (in addition to PPA) in the first year of induction and 5% in the second.

If you have concerns about the amount of ECT time being allocated please raise this with your Induction Tutor in the first instance.

Is induction time the same as PPA time?

Schools must provide all teachers with 10% guaranteed time for planning, preparation and assessment (PPA). Your induction time of 10% in year 1 of induction and 5% in year 2 is in addition to this PPA time.

As an ECT in a BSO school you need to be aware that you are likely to be receiving significantly more non-teaching time than in UK schools and your ECT time may have been factored into this when the school were scheduling your calendar before arrival.

Who decides how my time for induction activities is spent?

The DfE, through the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) state that the time should be used in whatever way is most appropriate to the individual ECT and their school. This means that both the school and the individual ECT have a role in identifying induction activities. However, in reality the school will have the final say in determining which activities are undertaken and when.

Please note that there is a statutory requirement for ECTs (from September 2021) to engage in an ECF-based induction irrespective of their location and ECTs in BSO schools will need to ensure engagement in the DfE's Core Induction Programme (CIP). ESP recommend the CIP materials developed by Education Development Trust for international ECTs.
